Our store sells hundreds of different products. While all of these products are legal, some of them are age-restricted. That means that these special products, like alcohol and tobacco, can only be sold to persons of legal age. To ensure that the Company and employees are complying with local and state laws, the government conducts random, unaccounted compliance checks. State and local governments can fine the employees for making an illegal sale. In the State of Alaska, an employee can be fined $300 or more and be disciplined under our Company Disciplinary Policy.
This manual will assist you in learning all you can about how to sell tobacco within the law. Along with this manual, the Company will provide all new front end employees with training lessons and tests that must be passed before an employee is permitted to sell tobacco. Tobacco Selling Policy
Under Alaska State Law, a person must be nineteen (19) to purchase tobacco. As an employee, you are not permitted to sell cigarettes, cigars, tobacco, or products containing tobacco to a person under the age of 19. It is also Alaska State Law that an employee must be 19 to handle tobacco. If you are under 19, you may not handle tobacco and you must ask a supervisor for assistance with tobacco sales. Failure to comply with Alaska State Laws and Company Tobacco Policies will result in disciplinary action. Please review Alaska Statutes 11.76.100, 11.76.106 and 11.76.107 attached to this written policy and contact your supervisor if you have any questions.
Tobacco Training, Compliance & Fines
The Company will provide all front end employees with training to ensure that employees are informed and aware of applicable laws and requirements. Once an employee has completed the training and received a certification of completion, the employee may start selling tobacco. Even if you are 19, you may not conduct a tobacco related sale without this certification. The training and tests will cover:
